TAINTOR SERIES


The Taintor series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils formed in loess. These soils are on crests of interfluves on dissected till plains and treads on stream terraces in river valleys. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 10.5 degrees C (51 degrees F). Mean annual precipitation is about 940 millimeters (37 inches).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Vertic Argiaquolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Taintor silty clay loam, on a nearly level slope of about 1 percent, in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 23 centimeters (0 to 9 inches); black (10YR 2/1) silty clay loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) dry; moderate fine granular structure; friable; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

A1--23 to 41 centimeters (9 to 16 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silty clay loam, gray (10YR 5/1) dry; weak very fine subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine and granular; friable; common black (10YR 2/1) coats on faces of peds; neutral; gradual smooth boundary.

A2--41 to 51 centimeters (16 to 20 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silty clay loam, gray (10YR 5/1) dry; moderate very fine subangular blocky structure; firm; common black (10YR 2/1) coats on faces of peds; common fine distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), and common fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; common fine faint dark gray (10YR 4/1) redoximorphic depletions; common fine irregular masses of iron-manganese; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. [Combined thickness of the A horizon is 35 to 60 centimeters (14 to 24 inches)].

Btg1--51 to 61 centimeters (20 to 24 inches); dark gray (10YR 4/1) silty clay; moderate very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; firm; many distinct dark gray (10YR 4/1) and very dark gray (10YR 3/1) clay films on faces of peds; common very dark gray (10YR 3/1) and black (10YR 2/1) coats on faces of peds; common fine prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) and common fine distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) redoximorphic depletions; common fine irregular masses of iron-manganese; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg2--61 to 71 centimeters (24 to 28 inches); gray (5Y 5/1) silty clay; moderate very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; firm; many distinct dark gray (5Y 4/1), gray (5Y 5/1) and very dark gray (5Y 3/1) clay films on faces of peds; common fine faint olive gray (5Y 5/2) and dark gray (5Y 4/1) redoximorphic depletions; common fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4), yellowish brown (10YR 5/6), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), and strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; common fine irregular masses of iron-manganese; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg3--71 to 91 centimeters (28 to 36 inches); gray (5Y 5/1) silty clay loam; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; firm; common distinct dark gray (5Y 4/1), gray (5Y 5/1) and very dark gray (5Y 3/1) clay films on faces of peds; common fine faint olive gray (5Y 5/2) and dark gray (5Y 4/1) redoximorphic depletions; common fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4), yellowish brown (10YR 5/6), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), and strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; common fine irregular masses of iron-manganese; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg4--91 to 117 centimeters (36 to 46 inches); gray (5Y 5/1) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; few distinct dark gray (5Y 4/1), gray (5Y 5/1) and very dark gray (5Y 3/1) clay films on faces of peds; common fine faint olive gray (5Y 5/2), light olive gray (5Y 6/2), gray (5Y 6/1), and dark gray (5Y 4/1) redoximorphic depletions; common fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4), yellowish brown (10YR 5/6), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), and strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; common fine irregular masses of iron-manganese; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. [Combined thickness of the Btg horizon is 30 to 125 centimeters (12 to 49 inches)].

Cg--117 to 152 centimeters (46 to 60 inches); gray (5Y 6/1) silty clay loam; massive; friable; common fine faint gray (5Y 5/1), light olive gray (5Y 6/2), and dark gray (5Y 4/1) redoximorphic depletions; common fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4), yellowish brown (10YR 5/6), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), and strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; common fine and medium irregular masses of iron-manganese; neutral.

TYPE LOCATION: Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) 108C-Illinois and Iowa Deep Loess and Drift, West Central Part, Wapello County, Iowa subset; about 1/2 mile east of the village of Highland Center; located about 759 meters (2,530 feet) south and 456 meters (1,520 feet) west of the northeast corner of section 15, T. 73 N., R. 13 W.; USGS Hedrick quadrangle; lat. 41 degrees 7 minutes 36 seconds N. and long. 92 degrees 20 minutes 24 seconds W., NAD 83.

Minnetonka--have carbonates within a depth of 132 centimeters (52 inches)
Olbut-have carbonates and salts at 25 to 61 centimeters (10 to 24 inches)
Sacville--have a rock fragment content of 1 to 60 percent in the lower third of the series control section
Sampsel--have a paralithic contact with shale within a depth of 203 centimeters (80 inches)
Terrabella--have matrix hues of 5YR or 7.5YR in the middle third of the series control section and have a clay content that averages 40 to 55 percent in the particle-size control section
Virden--are in areas that have a mean annual air temperature range of 11 to 14 degrees C (52 to 57 degrees F) and a mean annual precipitation range of 860 to 1,140 millimeters (34 to 41 inches) - see remarks

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Kalona, Mahaska, Otley, and Sperry soils.
Kalona--are on similar landscape positions as the Taintor soils and do not have an argillic horizon
Mahaska--are at higher elevations on summits of interfluves and have a frequently saturated zone between depths of 0.3 to 1.1 meter during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of the 30 year mean of annual precipitation
Otley--are at lower elevations on side slopes and have a frequently saturated zone between depths of 1.2 to 1.8 meters during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of the 30 year mean of annual precipitation
Sperry--are at lower elevations in shallow depressions on interfluves and have an albic horizon

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage class--poorly drained--these soils are frequently saturated at the soil surface to a depth of 0.3 meter during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of the 30 year mean of annual precipitation, this saturation is considered apparent
Saturated hydraulic conductivity--1.0 to 10.00 micrometers per second

USE AND VEGETATION:
Most areas are cultivated. The principal crops are corn, soybeans, small grains, and hay. The native vegetative cover is a herbaceous wetland community commonly inhabited with Bluejoint Grasses, Fowl Bluegrasses, Green Muhlies, Fox Sedges, Field Sedges, Dudleys Rushes, Torreys Rushes, Swamp Milkweeds, False Sneezeweeds, False Asters, New England Asters, White Panicled Asters, and Wild Mints.

argillic horizon--the zone from a depth of 51 to 117 centimeters (Btg1, Btg2, Btg3, and Btg4 horizons);
udic moisture regime.

Further study is needed to differentiate Edinburg, Taintor, Virden and Winterset series.
