ARISPE SERIES


The Arispe series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils formed in loess. These soils occur on short, convex side slopes and on head slopes. Slope ranges from 2 to 14 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 10 degrees C. Mean annual precipitation is about 810 millimeters.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Aquertic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Arispe silty clay loam, on a northeast-facing, convex slope of about 7 percent, in a bluegrass pasture. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 23 centimeters; black (10YR 2/1) silty clay loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) dry; moderate fine and very fine granular structure; friable; many fine and very fine and few medium roots; common fine and few medium tubular pores; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (17 to 26 centimeters thick)

AB--23 to 33 centimeters; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silty clay loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) kneaded, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; weak fine and very fine subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; firm; many fine and very fine and few medium roots; common fine and very fine and few medium tubular pores; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) coats on faces of peds; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (7 to 16 centimeters thick)

Btg1--33 to 41 centimeters; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) silty clay loam; moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; firm; many fine and very fine and few medium roots; common fine and few medium tubular pores; many distinct very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) clay films on faces of peds; many very dark gray (10YR 3/1) organic coats on faces of peds; few dark concretions (iron and manganese oxides); common fine distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) redoximorphic concentrations; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

Btg2--41 to 56 centimeters; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) and grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silty clay; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate fine and medium subangular blocky; firm; many fine and very fine roots; common fine and medium tubular pores; many distinct dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) clay films on faces of peds; few very dark gray (10YR 3/1) organic coats on faces of peds and along surfaces of root channels; common fine dark concretions (iron and manganese oxides); common fine prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) redoximorphic concentrations; moderately acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg3--56 to 82 centimeters; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silty clay loam; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate fine and medium subangular blocky; firm; common fine and very fine roots; common fine and medium tubular pores; many distinct dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) clay films on faces of peds; few very dark gray (10YR 3/1) organic coats on surfaces along root channels; common fine dark concretions and stains (iron and manganese oxides); common fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) and dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) redoximorphic concentrations; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg4--82 to 107 centimeters; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) and light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) silty clay loam; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; firm; common fine and very fine roots; common fine and medium tubular pores; common distinct dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) clay films on faces of peds; common fine and medium dark concretions and stains along with a 8 centimeter zone of dark concretions and stains (iron and manganese oxides); common fine and medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) and yellowish red (5YR 4/6) and common fine prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg5--107 to 135 centimeters; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) silty clay loam; weak medium prismatic structure; friable; few fine and very fine roots; common fine and medium tubular pores; common distinct grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) clay films on faces of prisms and along surfaces of root channels; common fine dark concretions and stains (iron and manganese oxides); common fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) and common fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) and yellowish red (5YR 4/6) redoximorphic concentrations; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Btg horizon is 50 to 120 centimeters.)

BCg--135 to 152 centimeters; light olive gray (5Y 6/2) silty clay loam; extremely coarse prismatic structure dissected by few oblique fractures; friable; few fine and very fine roots; common fine and medium tubular pores; common fine dark concretions and stains (iron and manganese oxides); common fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and common fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) redoximorphic concentrations; slightly acid.

Clarinda--are at lower landscape positions on side slopes and head slopes and are frequently saturated at the soil surface during the wettest periods of normal years

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage class--somewhat poorly drained--a frequently saturated zone occurs between depths of 0.3 to 1 meter during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of the 30 year mean of annual precipitation, this saturation is considered perched
Saturated hydraulic conductivity--1.00 to 10.00 micrometers per second (moderately high)
Surface runoff potential--low or medium

USE AND VEGETATION:
Most areas are cultivated. The principal crops are corn, soybeans, small grains, and legume hay. The native vegetation is big bluestem, little bluestem, switchgrass, and other grasses of the tall grass prairie.
