TINA SERIES

The Tina series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained, moderately slowly permeable soils formed in silty sediments and the underlying loamy alluvium on stream terraces or high flood plains. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual temperature is 54 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is 37 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Aquertic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Tina silt loam - on a nearly level stream terrace in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 6 inches; black (10YR 2/1) silt loam, gray (10YR 5/1) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; friable; many very fine roots; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary.

A--6 to 12 inches; black (10YR 2/1) silt loam, gray (10YR 5/1) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; friable; common very fine roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizon is 10 to 20 inches.)

Bt--12 to 26 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silty clay loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; firm; common very fine roots; common faint clay films on faces of peds; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Btg1--26 to 34 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silty clay; many fine prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) mottles; moderate fine prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; firm; few very fine roots; many faint clay films on faces of peds; common organic stains; common iron stains; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

Btg2--34 to 40 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silty clay loam; many medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) mottles; moderate fine prismatic structure parting to moderate fine subangular blocky; firm; few very fine roots; common faint clay films on faces of peds; common organic stains; common iron stains; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt and Btg horizons is 20 to 40 inches.)

2BCg--40 to 52 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) clay loam; many medium prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) mottles; moderate fine prismatic structure; firm; few very fine roots; few faint clay films on vertical faces of peds; common organic stains; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 16 inches thick)

2Cg--52 to 60 inches; multi-colored dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and (10YR 4/6), and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam; massive; friable; few organic stains in root channels; neutral.

TYPE LOCATION: Chariton County, Missouri; east of Brunswick; 1,800 feet south and 2,000 feet east of the northwest corner of section 12, T. 53 N., R. 20 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The upper part of the solum to a depth of 40 inches or more contains less than 15 percent sand, most of which is very fine sand. The thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 15 to 30 inches and extends into the Bt horizon. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral.

The A horizon commonly is black (10YR 2/1) or very dark gray (10YR 3/1), but some pedons are very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) or very dark brown (10YR 2/2). It is silt loam or silty clay loam. Some pedons have BA horizons.

The Bt horizon commonly is very dark gray (10YR 3/1) or black (10YR 2/1), but some pedons are very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) or very dark brown (10YR 2/2). It is silty clay loam or silty clay containing 35 to 48 percent clay.

The Btg horizon has a hue of 10YR to 5Y, value of 4 to 7 and chroma of 2 or less and is mottled. It is silty clay or silty clay loam. The particle size control section averages 35 to 48 percent clay.

The 2BCg horizon and the 2Cg horizon have a hue of 7.5YR to 5Y, value of 4 to 7 and chroma of 1 to 6. They are very fine sandy loam, fine sandy loam, silt loam, loam, and clay loam and contain 20 percent or more sand.

COMPETING SERIES: These include the Adair, Arispe, Chase, Flanagan, Greenton, Grundy, Herrick, Ipava, Lagonda, Lamoni, Macksburg, Mahaska, Malvern, Martin, Mayberry, Pawnee, Rutland, Seymour, Shorewood and Wymore series. Adair, Malvern and Mayberry soils have color of 7.5YR or 5YR in the upper part of the Bt horizon. Arispe, Grundy, Herrick, Ipava, Herrick, Macksburg, Mahaska, Seymour and Wymore soils have less than 15 percent sand throughout. Chase soils have a mollic epipedon more than 36 inches thick. Flanagan, Pawnee, Rutlan and Shorewood soils have carbonates in the lower part of the profile. Greenton and Martin soils have more clay in the lower part of the profile. Lagonda soils a have marked sand increase at depths less than 40 inches. Lamoni soils have more than 15 percent sand above depths of 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Tina soils are on low stream terraces or high floodplains and formed in silty sediments andthe underlying loamy alluvium. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 49 to 59 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 32 to 42 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Colo, Cotter, Dockery, Norborne, and Vesser soils that contain less than 35 percent clay; the more poorly drained Wabash and Zook soils; and the very fine textured Aholt, Booker, and Portage soils. The Cotter and Norborne soils are on similar landscapes. The Aholt, Booker, Dockery, Colo, Portage and Vesser soils occur on lower positions than the Tina soils. Zook and Wabash soils are slightly lower on the landscape or occur in depressional areas on similar landscapes.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderately slow. An apparent water table has an upper limit of 1.5 to 3.0 feet during November to June.

USE AND VEGETATION: Commonly cropped to corn, soybeans, small grains and hay. Native vegetation is tall prairie grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Missouri. The series is of moderate extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Indianapolis, Indiana

SERIES PROPOSED: Chariton County, Missouri, 1991. The name is from a small town in adjacent Carroll County.

REMARKS: The Tina series was a tentative series that was dropped in the Carroll County, Missouri correlation. It is now proposed to reactivate the name.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 26 inches (Ap, A and Bt horizons); argillic horizon - the zone from approximately 12 to 34 inches (Bt, Btg1 and Btg2 horizons).
