TYPICAL PEDON: Butters loamy fine sand--cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated).

Ap--0 to 11 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) fine sand; weak fine granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; slightly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

E--11 to 18 inches; light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/4) fine sand; weak fine granular structure; very friable; common fine roots; moderately acid; clear wavy boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)

Bt--18 to 29 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) fine sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; few medium roots; common fine pores; sand grains coated and bridged with clay; few medium distinct yellowish red (5YR 5/8) masses of oxidized iron; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 22 inches thick)

BC--29 to 35 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/8) loamy fine sand; few coarse distinct very pale brown (10YR 8/2) pockets of clean sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; few fine roots; common fine pores; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)

E'--35 to 48 inches; yellow (10YR 7/6) fine sand; common coarse distinct very pale brown (10YR 8/2) pockets of clean sand; weak fine granular structure; few medium faint yellow (10YR 8/8) iron depletions; very friable; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (2 to 20 inches thick)

B'tg--48 to 52 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) fine sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; few fine pores; sand grains coated and bridged with clay; few medium distinct reddish yellow (7.5YR 7/8) and many medium distinct brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) masses of oxidized iron; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)

B't--52 to 70 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/8) fine sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; many coarse distinct light gray (10YR 7/2) iron depletions; few iron concretions; strongly acid. (10 to 30 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Bladen County, North Carolina; 3 miles northeast of Bladenboro, 1.3 miles northeast from intersection of North Carolina Highway 242 and State Road 1117 on North Carolina Highway 242, 200 feet south of farm road, and 5 feet west of farm road, in a cultivated field.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Thickness of sandy and loamy textured horizons: More than 60 inches thick over stratified sediments
Depth to Bedrock: Greater than 60 inches
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: 48 to 60 inches, January to March
Rock Fragment content: 0 to 15 percent, by volume, throughout, but less than 5 percent in most pedons
Soil Reaction: Very strongly acid to strongly acid, except where limed; In a few pedons, reaction in the BC and E' horizon ranges to slightly acid
Other Soil Features--0 to 4 percent (by volume) plinthite in Bt horizons

Color--hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 4 to 8, and chroma of 4 to 8, or is variegated in shades of these colors

Bt horizon:
Color--hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 4 to 8

Dominant Vegetation: Where cultivated--corn, soybeans, tobacco, peanuts, small grain, truck crops, and pasture. Where wooded--hickories, flowering dogwood, American holly, American sweetgum, loblolly pine, longleaf pine, blackjack oak, southern red oak, post oak, and common greenbrier.

Distribution: Upper surfaces of the Lower Coastal Plain and the Middle Coastal Plain of North Carolina and possibly Virginia and South Carolina
Extent: moderate
