The A horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 2 to 4. It is loamy sand or sandy loam in the fine-earth fraction.
The E horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 6 or 7 and chroma of 2 to 4. It is loamy sand or sandy loam in the fine-earth fraction.
The BE horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 4 to 6 and chroma of 2 to 8. It is loamy sand or sandy loam in the fine-earth fraction.
The Bt horizon has hue of 2.5YR through 7.5YR, value of 4 through 6, and chroma of 6 or 8. It is sandy clay loam or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction.
The BC horizon has hue of 10YR through 10R, value of 4 through 7, and chroma of 4 through 8. It is sandy loam, loam, or sandy clay loam in the fine-earth fraction.
The C horizon is variable in color and is stratified sandy loam, loamy sand, and sandy clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Some pedons have C horizons of gray clay.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bodine, Flomaton, Leesburg, Saffell, and Zafra series. Bodine soils contain more than 35 percent chert fragments throughout. Flomaton soils contain less clay in the control section. Leesburg soils contain less than 35 percent coarse fragments. Saffell and Zafra soils have sola less than 60 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lillington soils are on gently sloping to steep side slopes on high stream terraces in the upper Coastal Plain. Slopes range from 2 to 25 percent. The soils formed in loamy alluvium. Near the type location, mean annual rainfall is about 47 inches and mean annual temperature is 61 degrees Fahrenheit.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Dothan, Fuquay, Faceville, Gilead, Orangeburg, and Troup soils. All of these soils contain less than 15 percent coarse fragments. In addition, Dothan and Fuquay soils have plinthite; Faceville, and Gilead soils contain more clay and Troup soils have more than 40 inches of sand surface.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to rapid runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: About one-half of the acreage is cleared. The native
vegetation is mixed hardwood and pine with loblolly pine, white oak, red oak, hickory, sweetgum, holly, persimmon, and flowering dogwood the dominant species. Corn, soybeans, cotton, tobacco, and pasture are the main crops grown.
