TYPICAL PEDON: Mountain Park gravelly sandy loam--forested. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 4 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4); gravelly sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; friable; many very fine and fine and common medium and coarse roots; 24 percent gravel and 6 percent cobbles; common fine flakes of mica; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (1 to 6 inches thick)

BE--4 to 10 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4); gravelly sandy loam; weak fine subangular blocky parting to moderate fine granular structure; firm; many very fine and fine and common medium and coarse roots; 25 percent gravel and 9 percent cobbles; many fine flakes of mica; very strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.

Bt--10 to 23 inches; yellowish red (5YR 4/6) gravelly sandy clay loam; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; firm; common very fine to medium roots; common prominent clay films on faces of peds; many fine flakes of mica; 15 percent gravel and 3 percent cobbles; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (8 to 20 inches thick)

BC--23 to 32 inches; yellowish red (5YR 4/6) gravelly sandy loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; firm; few very fine to medium roots; few faint clay films on faces of peds; many fine flakes of mica; 5 percent gravel, 10 percent paragravel, and 3 percent paracobbles; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.

Cr--32 to 46 inches; moderately hard mica schist; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.

C--46 to 55 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) sandy loam; massive; friable; many fine mica flakes; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.

C'r--55 to 65 inches; moderately hard mica schist; strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Fulton County, Georgia; about 150 feet east of Juniper St. and 800 feet north of Rocky Creek; USGS Mountain Park Quadrangle; lat. 34 degrees 04 minutes 57.5 seconds N. and long. 84 degrees 24 minutes 19 seconds W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to top of Argillic horizon: 4 to 18 inches
Depth to base of Argillic horizon: 21 to 37 inches
Depth to Soft Bedrock: 20 to 40 inches
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: Greater than 60 inches
Rock Fragment Content: 0 to 34 percent, by volume, in all horizons
Surface Rock Fragment Content: 0 to 4 percent, mostly cobbles and stones
Soil Reaction: Very strongly acid to slightly acid in the A and E horizons and very strongly acid to moderately acid in the Bt, BC, C and Cr horizons.
Mica Content: 20 to 50 percent, by volume, mica flakes throughout
Glauconite Content: Weighted average of 0 to 0 percent pellets in the A, E, B, and C horizons
Other Soil Features: Clayey part of the argillic extends to a depth of 30 inches or more.
