LUGOFF SERIES

The Lugoff series consists of deep, well drained, moderately permeable, clayey soils that formed in Coastal Plains sediments. Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Paleudults

TYPICAL PEDON: Lugoff gravelly loamy sand, 2 to 6 percent slopes, cultivated
(Colors are for moist soil)

Ap--0 to 8 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) gravelly loamy sand; moderate medium granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; 25 percent rounded pebbles of quartz 1/4 inch to 3 inches in diameter; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

E--8 to 14 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) gravelly sandy loam; moderate medium granular structure; very friable; common fine roots; 42 percent rounded pebbles of quartz 1/4 inch to 2-1/2 inches in diameter; moderately acid; clear wavy boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)

Bt1--14 to 34 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) gravelly clay; common medium distinct yellowish red (5YR 5/6) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; few faint clay films on faces of peds; 22 percent round pebbles of quartz 1/4 inch to 2 inches in diameter; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.

Bt2--34 to 47 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) clay; many medium distinct yellowish read (5YR 5/6) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few faint clay films on faces of peds; 11 percent rounded pebbles of quartz 1/4 inch to 2 inches in diameter; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.

Bt3--47 to 65 inches; mottled red (2.5YR 4/6) and reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) clay; common medium distinct pale brown (10YR 6/3) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; 2 percent rounded pebbles of quartz 1/4 inch to 1-1/2 inches in diameter; very strongly acid. (Bt is more than 45 to more than 60 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Kershaw County, South Carolina; 5.8 miles northwest of Camden; 0.9 mile northwest of junction of State Highways 5 and 128; 0.6 mile southeast of crossing of State Highway 128 over Horse Head Branch; 1,725 feet north of junction of field road leading north and State Highway 128; 200 feet north of field road; 200 feet west of woods.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The solum is more than 65 inches in thickness. It is very strongly acid to moderately acid throughout except for the surface layer in limed areas. Rounded quartz pebbles commonly range from 15 to 40 percent in the A horizon, 15 to 45 in the E horizon, 15 to 35 percent in the upper Bt horizon and 0 to 20 percent in the lower Bt. Some pedons have one or more stone lines in the profile.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 or 5 and chroma of 1 or 2. The E horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 5 to 7 and chroma of 3 to 5. It is gravelly loamy sand or gravelly sandy loam.

The Bt horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 10YR, value of 4 to 6 and chroma of 5 to 6. It has few to many mottles in the lower part in shades of red, yellow and brown. It commonly is gravelly clay in the upper part and clay in the lower part; but in some pedons, it is gravelly clay throughout the Bt horizon; and some pedons have subhorizons of gravelly sandy clay loam, gravelly clay loam or gravelly sandy clay.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Dewey, Esto, Faceville, Fullerton, Henderson, Marlboro, Summerton and Waynesboro series in the same family and the Aycock, Carnegie, Caroline, Collegedale, Dothan, Freemanville, Norfolk, Shubuta, Sunsweet, Tifton, Turbeville and Varina series in similar families. Dewey, Faceville, Fullerton, Summerton and Waynesboro soils have dominant hue of 5YR or redder in the series control section. Esto soils are mottled in the upper part of the Bt horizon. Henderson soils have 10 percent or more coarse fragments of chert. Marlboro soils do not have gravelly textures in the Bt horizons. Aycock, Carnegie, Dothan, Norfolk and Tifton soils have less than 35 percent clay in the particle size control section. Caroline, Collegedale, Shubuta, and Turbeville soils have mixed mineralogy. Freemanville, Sunsweet and Varina soils have a horizon with more than 5 percent plinthite within a depth of 60 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lugoff soils are on nearly level to strongly sloping interstream divides and the accompanying side slopes of the Coastal Plain uplands with slope gradients dominantly less than 10 percent but ranging up to 15 percent. The soil formed in clayey Coastal Plain sediments. Near the type location mean annual precipitation is about 48 inches, mean annual temperature is about 61 degrees, and the frost-free season is about 228 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Dothan, Faceville, Norfolk, Tifton and Varina series plus the Ailey, Chewacla, Georgeville, Herndon, Lloyd, Nason, Orangeburg, Rains and Wagram soils. These soils do not have gravelly textures. In addition, Ailey and Wagram soils have surface layers more than 20 inches thick and generally are at higher positions on the landscape; Chewacla and Rains soils are at lower positions on the landscape and are more poorly drained; Georgeville, Herndon and Nason soils generally are at lower positions on the landscape and formed in Carolina slates; Orangeburg soils have fine loamy textures in the particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most of these soils are cultivated. Cotton, corn, soybeans, small grain, and hay are the principal crops.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina. The series is of small extent.
