POCOMOKE SERIES

The Pocomoke series consists of very deep, very poorly drained, moderately permeable soils formed in sandy Coastal Plain sediments. Pocomoke soils are on broad low-lying uplands and in closed depressions. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, siliceous, active, thermic Typic Umbraquults

TYPICAL PEDON: Pocomoke sandy loam-wooded.

A--0 to 11 inches; black (10YR 2/1) fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable; common fine and medium roots; very strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 18 inches thick)

E--11 to 16 inches; variegated gray (10YR 6/1) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loamy sand; weak fine granular structure; very friable; few fine and medium roots; few fine and medium pores; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick)

Btg--16 to 36 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) sandy loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; few fine pores; few clay films in pores and bridging sand grains; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (8 to 20 inches thick)

Cg--36 to 54 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loamy sand; massive; very friable; few fine and medium roots; few fine pores; some white (5Y 8/1) sand grains; common medium distinct gray (10YR 6/1) iron depletions; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.

2Cg--54 to 72 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) sandy clay loam with thin strata of coarser material; massive; friable; few fine and medium roots; strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Horry County, South Carolina; about 3.0 miles northeast of Nixonville on South Carolina Highway 90, 50 feet north of the highway, in woods.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 22 to 40 inches. Gravel content in the solum ranges from 0 to 15 percent. In unlimed, areas the soil ranges from strongly acid to extremely acid.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR through 5Y, value of 2 or 3 and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is loamy sand, fine sandy loam, sandy loam or loam, including a mucky modifier.

The E horizon has hue of 10YR to 5Y value of 4 to 6 and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is loamy sand, fine sandy loam, sandy loam or loam.

The Bt horizon has hue of 10YR through 5Y, value of 3 through 7 and matrix chroma of 1 or 2 or it is neutral with value of 3 to 7. Iron depletions are in shades of brown or gray and masses of oxidized iron are in shades of red brown or yellow. Texture is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or loam with less than 18 percent clay and less than 35 percent silt. Iron depletions are in shades of brown or gray and masses of oxidized iron are in shades of red brown or yellow.

The C or 2C horizon has hue of 10YR through 5Y, value of 3 through 7 and chroma of 1 or 2, or it is neutral with value of 3 to 7. Texture is commonly loamy sand but may be stratified below 40 inches, ranging from sand to sandy clay loam. Iron depletions are in shades of brown or gray and masses of oxidized iron are in shades of red brown or yellow.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other known series in the same family. Similar soils in other families are the Bayboro, Byars, Cape Fear, Deloss, Fallsington, Hyde, Johnstown, Portsmouth, Roanoke, Rutlege, Torhunta, and Weeksville soils. The Bayboro, Byars, Cape Fear, Deloss, Fallsington, Hyde, Portsmouth and Roanoke soils have more than 18 percent clay in the particle size control sections. Fallsington soils have mean annual soil temperatures of less than 59 degrees F. The Johnstown, Rutlege, Torhunta and Weeksville soils lack argillic horizons.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Pocomoke soils are on level to nearly level uplands and in closed depressions. Slopes are smooth, simple and concave. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Pocomoke soils formed in sandy sediments, mostly of marine origin, on low terraces of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains. Mean annual precipitation ranges from about 40 to 60 inches. Mean annual soil temperature is 59 degrees F. to 72 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: In addition to the competing soils these include the Dragston, Goldsboro, Kenansville, Lynchburg, Norfolk, Osier, and Rains soils. None of these soils have an umbric epipedon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained, moderately permeable soils.

USE AND VEGETATION: Cleared and adequately drained areas are used for corn, soybeans, pasture and truck crops. Blueberries, strawberries and melons are grown in some areas. Native vegetation includes water and willow oaks, swamp maple, bay, sweetgum, cypress, pond pine, slash pine and loblolly pine.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Delaware, Maryland, North Caroline, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The series is of large extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Camden County, New Jersey, 1943.

REMARKS: Type location moved from Somerset County, MD to thermic temperature regime (Horry County, SC) May 2007.
